Studio 0.1
Tuesday 25/02/20I came into my first vcd class feeling nervous, excited, and worried, and came out of todays class and I felt refreshed, happy, and feeling positive for the year ahead. I was stoked to have Jason and ... as my teachers this year. They made me (and I'm sure majority of the class) welcomed, excited and they especially made us laugh which seems most teachers lack doing. I am excited for the year ahead with them and believe ill learn a lot from them.

Today we unpacked our matrix ideas and shared them with our group table. Once Jason came round to ours I gave him my idea of three best lifeguarding beaches in wellington, with this he informed me to think about the tangiable differences and polar opposites. This way I was able to think more abstract about my topic leaving me with 'the three worst beaches in wellington, island bay, oriental bay, and breaker bay. I am aiming at a older audience possibly with familes. This class let me understand more of the assingment and how broad and creative I can get with it. I am a little nervous to creative my own images as I feel I lack in that area. Over the weekend Ill be able to visit these beaches and find out their senses and what attracts and what not.

Today's lecture we discussed semiotics, learning about icons, index association and representation, symbols, literal, and arbintray. They are our emotive relationship that we have with semiotics. Learning about how our brain uses semiotics everyday to interpret.
Today's studio was all about unpacking our idea and bringing in resources such as an object where we would draw normally, then with our left hand, then not taking the pen off the paper, drawing the objects negative space, and larger scale. This I enjoyed and felt everyone had a lot of fun with. Next we had our own time to continue creating uses different types of pens, crayons, and paper. After a few drawings I felt stuck and started to compare my own work to everyones elses. I started to re-think my topic which then I felt overwhemled and un creative.
I talked to Jason after the class we we disucssed my problem with my topic.
Here I have drawn multiple different ways of interpreting my beach bag. By using a range of different approches I felt this benefitted my design process as I needed to find an aesthetic to my topic and how I want to present my images when it comes to creating the brochure.

Starting off our day in the 'Pit' for a lecture we were able to understand the graphic system and step by step process about how our brochure spread should look. We were given examples which helped a lot with what my designs should include. Moving upstairs we critiqued our collages/illustrations which were all pretty dusty but extremely helpful. Donald reviewd my ideas and had a look at my mood board and suggested I focus on focal points and a special segment for each location. I needed to hear this as my brain felt quite fuzzy. At points I tend to feel quite uncreative which doesn't help my train of thought. I am learning that I have a very different way of thinking and creating and that is okay. I am very keen and excited to collage as it cutting out shapes, photos and designs is something I enjoy and feel I could do well with my brochure.
Our one hour lab class was very successful (even though our tutor was going fast) I managed to get the hang of InDesign and felt confident using the skills I learnt today into my own work.

3.2 - Interim Presentation
Today we critiqued our two locations and Sports & Rec pages from the brochure. I had spent all week changing ideas around and coming to a final aesthetic. On Tuesday and went out and took more photos of my locations, it started off as a nice sunny day then turned to crap once I went to snap some photos. I was a little dissapointed but worked with what I had and turned them black and white. After the critque and looking back at my feedback I was happy and satisfied with what I need to do now to progress my work. I am aiming to hopefuloly get my brochure done at least 5 days before hand in beacuse I know that I work slow and tend to stress easily. I am excited yet nervous to create this work, I just hope it turns out how I want it to. Jason really helped me but my work into perspective today after the critque, he gave me positive and (good) negative feedback and put a path in my head.

This morning in the pit we got a run down about the spreads and how to keep on track etc. Felt ready and excited for the week a head with a few goals in mind. Today I would like to work on a new spread and get it drafted done. Currently in our studio we have been looking at brochures that we collected around Wellington on the weekend. These helped to get some ideas into our head and see a wide variety of different brochure designs, how we can interpret these negatively and positivley.

In the heart warming city of Wellington we are lucky enough to be able to have acess to beautiful south cost beaches which are less than 20 minutes from the CBD. In this little panflet which you can carry around in your hand, we have come down to three precious beaches which will be on your favourites list sooner or later.
Monday 20th April - First Online Class/Lecture
First Online Class in Lockdown.
5.1
Getting back into the swing of things in a completely different non physical envrionment was definietly challenging, but by the end of the class I found for our first time it was a hit. I came back with new, nervous, and fresh ideas. During the classroom classes today I was able to breifly catch - up with Jason and Donald, they asked how I was and how the environment at home was which felt comforting. I feel although I have been refreshed about how to go about my brochure now but at the same time not completely loving my brochure and feeling a shift in my layout and illustrations should be done. I hope I can sort this out and be on track for Thursdays interim this week.
Thursday 23rd April
Interim 2 - online.
To begin our second online lecture today, we began by starting in our classroom with Donald and Jason then splitting off into our workgroups to begin our interim. I came into the interim feeling pretty on edge going about how people would react to my brochure so far as I am not too impressed with it at the moment and feel although I could go with a better approach. Though Jason was very helpful and took me through some process I can improve on (as shown on the screenshots)

Monday 27th April - Anzac Day (class cancelled)
Work day and zoom call with Jason.
Today I have been carrying on as a normal class today, getting up early before normal class starts (9am) and being as productive as possible. Over the weekend I shifted my brochure scheme and decided on a clean layout, with a pop of colour (pink). Using the same and new photos, I created more illustration to layer on top of them. After I felt reasobaly stoked to go on to the next step in my brochure (refining and tuning) I emailed Jason for a quick 15 min zoom feedback call. This was so handy and my spirits felt lifted by the end of the call. He was honest which is what I need, and gave me a page full listed of things to re-assess and fix. Im feeling confident for the week ahead to get this brochure completed a long with the rest of the elements it comes with. I wanting to get it perfected so I can feel positive after its hand in

RATIONAL
The focus for this brochure is to convey a clear, attractive, and personal experience for my target audience who is relatively new to the south coast of Wellington and introduce them to iconic, sandy, and slightly forgotten locations. Visually and emotionally my design choices have been chosen to communicate a way of reaching out to people who have an interest in the activities shown in each location. Visually, the selected images carry out an equal sensation and a cohesive, creative flow. Emotionally, the illustrations and layering of transparency, lively colours and typography sets a source of nostalgia for the target audience, and displays Puna by establishing relationships through each spread which is communicated by flowing tracing through the reader's eye. I ensure each element, such as the ad-libs and semiotics that distinguish personality and convenience provides emotive aspects that allows the reader to instantly experience the visual and emotional clues. I have learnt the capability to communicate the three elements through techniques such as texture, colour, shape, and photography and willing to use the aspects when I am facing future projects.
*Due to Covid-19 scorching bay’s image has been selected from Pinterest as I was not able to leave my bubble and visit my location and re-take a preferred photograph. I have linked the credit in my back page on brochure*
